Different, Not Less

As a rule, I don't cry. Well, maybe at the end of It's a Wonderful Life at the line, "To my big brother George; the richest man in town!"

However, tonight I cried like a baby. Himself and I watched the movie Temple Grandin on HBO. Claire Danes performance as the title character was brilliant.

Temple Grandin is a woman with autism. She didn't talk until she was four years old. Now in her early sixties, she graduated college, earned a Master's degree and has a PhD. She is a highly respected scientist and advocate for autism.

Why was I crying? Because the sky's the limit for my Isabella! She may never be a scientist or have a PhD but, although I have always had hope for her, this movie gave me even more. We don't know what is going on in Bells' mind; how she processes information. Hopefully, like Dr. Grandin, she will be able to tell us one day.

Don't give up! As Dr. Grandin said, people with autism are different, not less.

Thank you, HBO.

With faith and hope, g

  1. I have never heard of this movie, but it sounds fascinating. And, I really think Claire Danes is an awesome actress so how wonderful that she did such an important project.

I agree with you Gail, the sky is the limit with Isabella. Always remember that God created her inmost (and for that matter, outermost) being, he knit her together in your daughter's womb, she is made by the hand of the Father. Therefore, she is a pretty special being indeed and her future is pretty bright!

    Take care, Amy

  2. All things are possible to those who believe. Sometimes we need help grasping "some things" let alone "all things." Glad you got some help - and hope - tonight.

When I was told by the adoptive parents about Luke's diagnosis of mild to high-functioning Asperger's syndrome, the first thing I did when going through the checklist was see myself when I was a kid, and all I could think was, "Sorry about that, Luke."

But you know? My view of him didn't change. I wrote the parents back (it took them several years to be able to finally tell me for whatever reason). I said that Luke is our blessing from above, and nothing changes that - including and especially this.

    Love ya!
