(Playing it) Safe

"Safe?" said Mr. Beaver."Who said anything about safe? 'Course he isn't safe. But he's good. He's the King, I tell you.” ― C.S. Lewis, The Chronicles of Narnia "A ship in harbor is safe -- but that is not what ships are built for." John A. Shedd, Salt from My Attic, 1928 How dull to always play things safely all the time. Think of some of the things we would be missing out on had there not been a spirit of adventure within the hearts of some: There had to be a first person to try sushi. clams, oysters! What about taking a ship out into the open sea? Building suspension bridges? Flying like a bird...planes, hang gliders, etc. What about discovering electricity? And, greatest of all, giving one's life for another; in the battle field, on the streets, on a cross. Safety can be highly overrated.

  1. Excellent post. Staying safe means not trying new things. It means not doing the A-Z challenge and meeting new friends. I'm glad safety is overrated. Thanks for posting.

  2. Hmmm, tricky one to comment on.

My line of thinking... In all honesty, I like safe.

I wear a life jacket when out boating to be safe. I wear my seatbelt in the car to keep safe. I follow rules to keep safe. I'm not going to stick the prong of a metal fork in a power point, that'd be stupid. When I'm sick I go to the doctor, it would be terrible to pass on a terrible illness to others for not playing it safe. Even the flu can kill.

I like safe. I think even the most famous inventors still play it safe, they'd have to, to a certain extent.

Well, I especially like that I'm in safe hands with God.

Yep, me and safe, a perfect match.

  3. Couldn't agree more. The older I get the more I realize how short life really is. Go for it, make a fool of yourself, laugh, try something new, these are the things that give life to our lives.

  4. Couldn't agree more. Go for it, try something new, make a fool and laugh at yourself. The older I get I realize life's too short and plus, no one really cares what I do. I hope to impart this lesson to my kids.

  6. Lovely post! I shivered :) I wonder who it was who tried the first piece of sushi. I also wonder who it was who was the first person to decide to drink cow milk or think it might be a cool idea to do fire eating and sword swallowing!

  7. Saftey can be overrated... sometimes :) I really need to learn to let go and step out on a limb more with my writing, but when it comes to physically-based stuff, I'm still kinda a wuss. Still, kudos to the early sushi tastetesters. Om nom nom!
